Sustainability & Community Impact
At Maluku Voyages Collective, we believe that luxury and responsibility are not mutually exclusive; they are intrinsically linked. Our privilege to operate in the heart of the Coral Triangle, one of the most biodiverse and culturally rich regions on Earth, comes with a profound duty of stewardship. Our sustainability policy is not an afterthought—it is a core pillar of our business model, influencing every decision we make for our journeys in Ambon, Indonesia. Our commitment is to create a positive, lasting impact on the environment and the local communities we engage with. (See Ambon Island for context.)
Environmental Commitment: Preserving a Fragile Paradise
We are dedicated to minimizing our ecological footprint and actively contributing to the conservation of Maluku’s natural treasures.
- Marine Conservation Partnerships: We actively partner with and provide financial support to the Coral Triangle Center (CTC) and local Ambon-based conservation groups. A percentage of every booking is donated to support their work in marine protected area (MPA) enforcement, coral reef monitoring, and community-based conservation education.
- Strict No Single-Use Plastic Policy: All our tours and partner vessels are 100% free of single-use plastic bottles, straws, and bags. We provide guests with reusable water bottles and utilize filtered water systems on all our transportation.
- Carbon Offsetting Program: We calculate the carbon footprint of every client’s journey, including flights and boat travel. We then invest in certified carbon offset projects through Verra, focusing on Indonesian reforestation and renewable energy initiatives to render each trip carbon-neutral.
- Responsible Marine Interactions: Our marine guides, led by our in-house experts, are trained in the latest low-impact diving and snorkeling techniques. We adhere to strict guidelines to prevent reef damage and ensure wildlife is observed without disturbance.
Community Empowerment: Investing in People
Our goal is to ensure that the benefits of luxury tourism are shared directly with the people of Maluku, fostering sustainable economic development and preserving cultural heritage.
- Local Employment & Fair Wages: We are committed to maximizing local employment. Over 85% of our on-the-ground staff, from boat captains to concierge assistants, are hired from local Ambonese and Malukan communities. All employees receive fair wages that exceed industry standards, comprehensive health insurance (BPJS), and opportunities for professional development. Meet some of them on our team page.
- Sourcing from Local Enterprises: We prioritize local sourcing for our operations. This includes purchasing fresh produce from organic farms in villages around Ambon, sourcing sustainable seafood from local fishing families who use responsible methods, and commissioning amenities from local artisans.
- Support for Traditional Crafts: We facilitate direct, ethical-trade opportunities for our guests to purchase authentic handicrafts, such as traditional tenun textiles and spice products, directly from the creators. This ensures 100% of the revenue goes to the artisans and their communities.
- Community Development Fund: In addition to our conservation fund, we contribute to a community development fund that supports educational and public health projects in the remote villages we visit, chosen in consultation with local community leaders.
Our vision of luxury travel in Ambon, Indonesia is one that enriches our guests while protecting and enhancing the destination itself. We believe that the most memorable journeys are those that create a genuine, positive connection between travelers and the places they visit. Our commitment to sustainability is our promise to our clients, to our community partners, and to the future of the magnificent Maluku Islands.
